An efficient stroke depends on three macro-skills: Balance then Streamline then Propel.
Most swimmers try to improve by focusing on isolated pieces:
“Kick more.”
“Pull harder.”
“High-elbow recovery.”
The problem? None of those fixes work if the foundation isn’t there.
Our Balance-Streamline-Propel Framework is the key to understanding what you need to focus on to become a better swimmer.
A Better Way to Understand Swimming
We teach swimming through a simple framework:
Balance → Streamline → Propel
Everything in your stroke fits into one of these three categories.
Balance
If your body isn’t balanced, nothing else works.
Signs of poor balance:
- Legs sinking
- Feeling like you’re fighting the water
- Constant fatigue
When balance improves:
- The water supports you
- Movement becomes easier
- Breathing becomes more natural
Streamline
Once you’re balanced, the next step is reducing resistance.
This means:
- Long body lines
- Proper alignment
- Controlled movement
Most swimmers create drag without realizing it.
Fixing this alone can dramatically improve efficiency.
Propel
Only after balance and streamline are in place does propulsion matter.
Now you can:
- Apply force effectively
- Use your arms and legs efficiently
- Move through the water with purpose

Mindfulness about all three components will make your a better swimmer.
Why This Framework Works
Instead of trying to fix everything at once, you:
- Focus on the right layer
- Build skills in the correct order
- Create lasting improvement
How to Apply The BSP Framework
Next time you swim, don’t think:
“Swim harder.”
Think:
- Am I balanced?
- Am I streamlined?
- Am I propelling efficiently and in concert with my body?
