Why You’re Swimming 2–3 Times Per Week… and Not Getting Any Better

Getting better is more about how well you are swimming rather than how far you are swimming.

You’re swimming but not getting better.

You’re certainly showing up to the pool. Two, maybe three times a week. You’re putting in the effort. You’re swimming laps.

So why does it feel like nothing is changing?

You’re not alone. This is one of the most common frustrations we see from adult swimmers.

And the reason isn’t what most people think.

The Problem Isn’t Effort

Most swimmers assume:

“If I just swim more, I’ll get better.”

That works—for about the first few weeks.

After that, something different happens.

You start reinforcing the same movement patterns over and over again. If those patterns aren’t efficient, you’re not improving—you’re just getting better at swimming inefficiently.

Why Swimming Alone Doesn’t Lead to Improvement

Here’s what’s usually missing:

  • No feedback on your stroke
  • No understanding of what to fix
  • No structure to your workouts
  • No connection between drills and real swimming

So you end up stuck in a loop:

Swim → get tired → repeat

Practicing in a current with mirrors and video feedback speeds your progress.

What Actually Leads to Progress

Improvement comes from two things:

1. Better Technique

You need to understand:

  • How your body should move
  • What efficient swimming feels like
  • What’s currently holding you back

2. Structured Training

Once your stroke improves, you need to:

  • Apply it under different conditions
  • Build endurance without losing form
  • Train with purpose—not just swim

What This Looks Like in Practice

At Chicago Blue Dolphins, we take a different approach.

We don’t start with laps—we start with understanding.

  • Break the stroke down
  • Fix specific issues
  • Rebuild it into efficient movement
  • Then apply it to real swimming

From there, we layer in structured training through our PACE system.

The Bottom Line

If you’re swimming consistently but not improving, the issue isn’t effort.

It’s direction.

Once you understand what to change—and how to train—it’s a completely different experience.
