Michael Phelps on “60 Minutes”

Even though this interview aired two weeks ago (probably to promote Tuesday’s release of No Limits: The Will to Succeed, which each member of the CBD coaching staff got as a gift at today’s holiday party), I’m suddenly only just now hearing about it from everyone I know:

Some interesting tidbits from the segment:

  • • During training, he loses weight if he eats less than 8,000 calories a day.
  • • Viewers see his goal Olympic times (and 50 splits) in the 100 and 200 butterfly.
  • • A sample workout with coach Bob Bowman? 10,000 meters for time.

Mostly people kept telling me about the 25 yard race between Phelps and Cooper (about 11:15 into this 13-minute segment). Of course Phelps won, but just to be a geek, I timed the segment. If they didn’t clip out any of Cooper’s swim, he did about a 14.0, which isn’t too shabby for a 40+ news anchor in long trunks. (Phelps was about an 11.5 doing underwater dolphin kick from a push — that was a single take.)
